The sensor on the back of your watch shines green light into your skin and reads what bounces back. Melanin absorbs green light. That single fact is why heart rate accuracy is not identical for everyone, and why it is worth understanding if you are Indian, training hard, and wondering why your watch sometimes reads nonsense. It is also a question almost no fitness site covers for an Indian audience, which is odd given Indian skin tones commonly sit in the middle to darker range of the Fitzpatrick scale used in this research.

Where the evidence genuinely disagrees

This is not a settled question, and anyone telling you it is has picked a side. Some studies find a clear skin tone effect. At least one large study found that what you were doing mattered more than what your skin looked like. Both can be true: melanin reduces the available signal, and vigorous movement reduces it further, so the two compound rather than compete.

How the sensor works, in one paragraph

Optical heart rate uses photoplethysmography. A green LED shines into the skin, blood absorbs some of that light, and because blood volume pulses with each heartbeat the amount reflected back rises and falls. The device counts those fluctuations. Green is used because haemoglobin absorbs it well, which makes the pulse signal clear. The complication is that melanin also absorbs green light, so less of it reaches the blood and less returns to the sensor. The pulse is still there; there is simply less signal to find it in.

Body composition compounds this. More tissue between the sensor and the arteries means more scattering, which is why the modelling work looked at skin tone and body composition together rather than separately.

What this means in practice

Not that your device is useless. For most people, at rest and steady effort, wrist heart rate is still the most reliable number a wearable produces. The effect shows up at the edges, and those edges are exactly where lifters and interval runners live:

  • Heavy lifting. Gripping a bar flexes the wrist and squeezes tissue under the sensor. Add a weaker optical signal and the reading can drift or lock onto your cadence instead of your pulse.
  • Fast intervals. Rapid changes plus movement artefact is the hardest case for any optical sensor, and the least forgiving of a reduced signal.
  • Cold hands. Reduced peripheral blood flow means less signal again, and this stacks with everything above.

How to tell if it is affecting you

Do not guess from a spec sheet. Test it, in about ten minutes:

  1. Sit still for two minutes and compare your watch against a manual pulse count at your wrist or neck over 30 seconds, doubled. At rest they should be close.
  2. Do something hard for 60 seconds, then check again immediately. This is where a struggling sensor lags or reads low.
  3. Watch for the classic failure: a heart rate that sits suspiciously flat during hard effort, or one that matches your step cadence rather than your exertion.

If your device fails that test repeatedly, the fix is not a more expensive watch.

The fix that removes the variable entirely

A chest strap does not use light. It reads the heart's electrical signal directly, the same principle as an ECG, so skin tone, tattoos, cold hands and wrist flexion stop mattering. It is the most accurate consumer option for training, and it is usually far cheaper than upgrading your watch.

The practical setup for anyone whose wrist readings are unreliable: a chest strap for sessions, and a watch or ring for the other 23 hours, where resting heart rate and sleep are measured under near-ideal conditions anyway. Where this is heading

Manufacturers are aware of the problem. Published work is exploring multi-wavelength sensors and polarised light to improve signal quality across skin tones, and some devices already combine green with red and infrared. Expect this gap to narrow. Until then, the honest position is that accuracy varies by device and by person, and a ten-minute test on your own wrist tells you more than any review can.
