Your fitness tracker is genuinely accurate at heart rate and genuinely poor at calories. Published validation research puts energy expenditure error at roughly 31 percent for walking and running and about 52 percent for cycling, and a systematic review of commercially available devices found no brand inside acceptable accuracy limits for calorie burn. Heart rate, by contrast, came within 5 percent on six of seven devices in Stanford testing. Same wrist, same device, completely different levels of trust.

Why calories are the hardest number to get right

Your device measures two things directly: light reflected off your skin, which gives heart rate, and motion, which gives steps. Everything else is inferred. Calorie burn is not measured at all. It is modelled from your heart rate, your movement, and the age, weight, height and sex you typed in when you set the thing up.

That model has to guess the variables that matter most:

  • Your actual body composition. Two people at 75 kg with different muscle mass burn differently, and the device has no way to know which one you are.
  • Resistance and terrain. This is why cycling error is worst. A wrist sensor cannot tell the difference between spinning freely and grinding up a gradient in a heavy gear, but your body certainly can.
  • Efficiency. A trained runner burns less at the same pace than a beginner. Your watch does not adjust for that.

Weight training is the worst case of all. Heart rate stays moderate between sets while the actual metabolic cost is high, so most devices badly underestimate a heavy session and badly overestimate a sweaty low-effort cardio one.

The mistake that stalls fat loss

Your watch says you burned 600 calories. You eat an extra 600. If the real figure was 400, you just erased the entire deficit and more. This is the single most common reason someone trains hard for six weeks and the scale does not move.

What to do instead

The fix is not to throw the device away. It is to stop treating one number as a budget and start using the numbers it actually earns.

  1. Never eat back "burned" calories. Set your intake from your bodyweight and goal, then leave it alone for two to three weeks and watch the trend. Our calorie calculator gives you a starting point built on Indian portions.
  2. Use calorie burn as a relative number only. Today versus your own Tuesday is useful. Today versus a real figure is not, and today versus your friend's watch is meaningless.
  3. Trust the heart rate. It is the one metric that earns it, which is exactly what makes zone-based training workable off a consumer device.
  4. Judge the week by the scale trend and the tape. Weekly average bodyweight and a waist measurement tell you more about a fat loss phase than every calorie estimate your watch produced combined.

Does a chest strap fix it?

Partly, and only for the input. A chest strap measures the heart's electrical signal directly rather than inferring beats from light, so its heart rate is the most accurate consumer option available and noticeably better during intervals. But the calorie figure is still a model sitting on top of that input. Better input means a better estimate, not a correct one. The honest summary

Wearables are excellent accountability tools and poor measurement instruments for energy. Used for consistency, trend and heart rate, they genuinely help. Used as a calorie budget, they are the most reliable way we know to work hard for two months and wonder why nothing changed.
