Jain Diet for Weight Loss in the US and UK: Protein Without Onion, Garlic or Root Vegetables

A Jain weight loss plan for the US and UK: about 90 g of protein a day with no onion, garlic or root vegetables, the labels to check, and a sunset dinner.

Jain Diet for Weight Loss in the US and UK: Protein Without Onion, Garlic or Root Vegetables

A Jain weight loss plan in the US or UK runs on the same rules as any fat loss plan: a small calorie deficit and enough protein. The Jain part is where the protein comes from. With no eggs, onion, garlic or root vegetables, the day below reaches 94 g of protein in about 1,533 kcal, with dinner finished before a winter sunset.

For Jains abroad the problem is the same in every country. Eggs, chicken and fish carry the protein in most Western diet plans, and Indian restaurant food leans on onion, garlic and potato. So the plan has to be built from dal, paneer, curd, soya and tofu, and timed around sunset.

Protein per serving, no egg, onion or garlic

26 g

1 katori of cooked soya chunks

18 g

100 g of paneer

15 g

1 katori (150 g) of plain Greek yogurt

9.5 g

1 katori of chana dal

What Jain rules change on a weight loss plan

Jain eating leaves out meat, fish and eggs, and roots and tubers such as potatoes, onions, garlic and carrots, which Jain teaching classes as anant-kay (Jain vegetarianism). Many Jains also avoid honey, mushrooms and brinjal, and stricter families eat nothing between sunset and sunrise (chauvihar).

Practice varies. In Pew Research Center's 2021 survey of India, 92% of Jains said they are vegetarian and 67% said they avoid root vegetables (Pew, Religion and food). So the first question on a call is always which rules you keep, not which rules exist.

For weight loss, two of the rules help and two make it harder:

  • Helps: no potatoes means fewer starchy sabzis and no fries or chips at a work lunch.
  • Helps: an early dinner gives a long overnight gap without any extra effort.
  • Harder: no eggs removes the easiest protein in a US or UK supermarket.
  • Harder: in winter, a sunset dinner is really a late lunch, which leaves a long evening for snacks.

How many Jains live in the US and UK

The 2021 census counted 25,100 people in England and Wales who identified as Jain, up from 20,400 in 2011 (ONS, small populations). In North America, JAINA describes itself as an umbrella body of about 70 Jain centres representing 200,000 members in the US and Canada (JAINA).

Protein without eggs, onion or garlic

Per serving, the way you actually eat it. "Jain style" means cooked with tomato, ginger powder or hing and no onion or garlic; the protein does not change.

Firm tofu adds 17.3 g of protein per 100 g raw (USDA FoodData Central, FDC ID 172475) and works anywhere paneer does: bhurji, tikka, or cubed into a tomato gravy. Two notes for stricter families: many set curd at home and eat it the same day, so shop yogurt may not fit, and sprouted moong is left out by some Jains, so we do not plan around it unless you say it is fine.

Coach's tip: Paneer is getting easier to find in the UK. Its maker said Dairy Valley paneer would go on sale in Sainsbury's from late September 2026 at £3.50 for 200 g, and in Tesco from November (Dairy News). In the US, Indian grocers such as Patel Brothers stock paneer, soya chunks and every dal.

A Jain day at about 94 g of protein

Built for a London or New York winter. On 21 December the sun sets at 15:53 in London, 16:32 in New York and 16:43 in Toronto (NOAA solar formula), so dinner moves to mid-afternoon and the snack sits before it, not after.

Your coach sets the calories from your weight, height and week, so the portions move up or down. The shape stays: protein at every meal, the biggest protein serving at the meal before the long gap, and a roti count that fits the deficit.

Labels to check in US and UK shops

  • Hard cheese. Many hard cheeses are set with rennet; Parmigiano Reggiano, for one, is made with milk, salt and rennet (Parmigiano Reggiano consortium). Buy cheese that says vegetarian on the pack. Paneer is set with lemon juice or vinegar instead, though packaged brands are still worth a look at the ingredients (Cheese Scientist).
  • Low-fat flavoured yogurt. Some contain gelatin; a 2024 check of one US university's dining-hall yogurts found it in the low-fat flavoured cups but not in the Greek ones (Stanford Daily). Plain Greek yogurt is the safer buy, but read the ingredients.
  • Vitamin D3. Colecalciferol is made from lanolin (wool fat) or from lichen (NHS Specialist Pharmacy Service). Lichen D3 is plant-sourced, so ask for that if your doctor suggests a supplement.
  • Red colouring. In the US, carmine and cochineal extract must be named on the label (FDA rule, via Foley). Both come from insects.
  • Bread. L-cysteine, a dough conditioner, can be made from feathers or hair (Vegetarian Resource Group).
  • Granola, bars and cereals. Honey is common in the "natural" ones.

Paryushan and Ayambil weeks

Paryushan in 2027 runs from 27 August to 3 September in the Shwetambar calendar (USC Jain holy days calendar). During Ayambil Oli, observed for nine days twice a year, only one meal of plain food is eaten each day (Mahavir Foundation).

Weight loss is not the goal of those weeks, and we do not plan it that way. On full fast days there is no hard training: a walk and mobility work only. On one-meal days the session gets shorter and lighter. The week after, protein comes back to the usual target before the loads do.

Nutrients worth a blood test

A study of Hindu Brahmin, Jain and Muslim communities in Surat found a higher rate of iron deficiency anaemia among the Jain participants (Bhatti et al., PMID 23100921). Vitamin B12 comes almost entirely from animal foods, and vitamin D runs low in UK and Canadian winters. Ask your doctor for iron, B12 and vitamin D before you start a deficit; we plan food around the results and never prescribe supplements. More in vitamin B12 for Indian vegetarians and vitamin D for Indians abroad.

Food is half of it

A deficit without strength training loses muscle along with fat. Members abroad train 1-on-1 on video, three times a week on the default plan, with the load raised when the form holds.

Quick answers

Can you lose weight on a Jain diet?

Yes. Fat loss needs a calorie deficit and enough protein, and both fit Jain rules. A day of moong chilla, Greek yogurt, chana dal, roasted chana and soya chunks reaches about 94 g of protein in 1,533 kcal with no onion, garlic, eggs or root vegetables.

What is the best Jain protein source?

Per serving, cooked soya chunks (26 g per katori), paneer (18 g per 100 g) and plain Greek yogurt (15 g per katori) carry the most. Dal adds 8 to 10 g per katori.

What time should Jains eat dinner in a UK or US winter?

Before sunset, which on 21 December is 15:53 in London, 16:32 in New York and 16:43 in Toronto. In practice that is a mid-afternoon dinner: give it the day's biggest protein serving and move the snack before it, not after.
