Weight Loss Timeline
Most plans sell you a month. Fat loss works in quarters. This shows the real number of weeks, the deficit it needs, and what happens if you try to rush it.
Quick answer
A safe rate is 0.5 to 1 percent of bodyweight per week. For a 70 kg person that is 0.35 to 0.7 kg a week, so 1.5 to 3 kg in a month, not 5.
Losing 10 kg realistically takes four to six months. Plans promising it in six weeks are selling water weight and muscle loss, which is why the weight comes back.
Pace
Realistic timeline
That is about 4.7 months to lose 13 kg.
What one month actually looks like
At this pace you would lose about 2.8 kg in the first month. If you have seen "5 kg in 30 days" plans, that is roughly double a safe rate for most people, and a large share of it is water and muscle rather than fat.
This assumes consistent adherence. Real timelines run 20 to 30 percent longer because of travel, festivals, weddings and plateaus. Build that in rather than treating it as failure.

Why the First Month Lies
Almost everyone loses 2 to 4 kg quickly when they start. It feels like proof the plan is working, and it sets an expectation that the next month will do the same. It will not.
That early drop is mostly glycogen and the water bound to it, plus reduced gut content from eating less volume. Every gram of stored carbohydrate holds roughly three grams of water, so cutting carbohydrate empties a few kilos that were never fat. Once that reservoir is gone, the scale slows to the actual rate of fat loss, which is far less dramatic.
This is the single biggest reason people quit in month two. They are not failing, they are seeing the truth for the first time.
The Cost of Going Faster
Weight loss is not the same as fat loss. Push the deficit hard enough and the body meets the gap partly by breaking down muscle, especially without adequate protein and resistance training. The consequences compound:
- Lower resting metabolism. Less muscle means fewer calories burned at rest, permanently.
- Worse body composition at the same weight. You hit the target number looking softer than you expected.
- Easier regain. Fat returns faster than muscle does, so each cycle leaves you worse off.
- Adherence collapse. Very large deficits are simply not survivable alongside Indian family meals, travel and festivals.

A timeline is only useful with the numbers behind it. Find your maintenance calories with the TDEE calculator, set the protein floor that protects muscle with the protein calculator, and track composition rather than weight alone with the body fat calculator.
