Chicken, Mutton and Fish With High Uric Acid: Portion, Not Ban
Meat and seafood are where dietary purines concentrate, and in our members' logs that group is only about 3% of what gets eaten. What our coaches change first, and why the drink beside the meal matters more.

This is the food group where the advice is real. Meat, organ meat and some seafood are where dietary purines concentrate. The surprise in our members' logs is how small that group already is, at about 3% of logged items, so for most people the instruction is portion, not ban. And before you rework the meat, look at the drink: alcohol has the strongest flare evidence of anything on the table.

Turn the numbers into meals
Knowing the calories is the easy part. Eating to them through a normal Indian week is where most people slip.
A YourTrainer coach plans your week around the dal, roti, rice and sabzi you already eat, reviews your plate photos and adjusts every week. It runs fully online, so it works the same in Bengaluru or Boston.

Portion, frequency, and the drink beside it
The 2020 American College of Rheumatology gout guideline conditionally recommends limiting purine intake, limiting alcohol, and limiting high-fructose corn syrup. It also reports a dose response: more alcohol in the previous 24 hours, higher flare risk, starting at around 40% for one to two servings.
In practice our coaches do not ask people to become vegetarian. They move meat from an everyday centrepiece to a few times a week, shrink the serving, and put curd or paneer into the gap so protein does not collapse.

| Change | Why it is first |
|---|---|
| Alcohol in the evening | Strongest and fastest link to flares in the guideline |
| Organ meats, and the heaviest seafood | Where purines are most concentrated |
| Portion of chicken or mutton | Keeps the protein, drops the load |

Coach's tip: Weight does more than any single food swap. The guideline conditionally recommends a weight-loss programme for anyone with gout carrying extra weight, without endorsing a particular diet.
Quick answers
Can I eat chicken with high uric acid?
Usually yes, in a controlled portion and not every day. Chicken carries more purines than plant foods but far less than organ meats, and the guideline asks you to limit purines rather than eliminate them.
Is fish bad for uric acid?
Some seafood is high in purines, particularly small oily fish and shellfish. Frequency and portion matter more than a blanket ban, and this is worth discussing with your doctor if you flare often.
Does alcohol raise uric acid?
Yes, and this is the clearest dietary link in the guideline. One to two drinks in the previous 24 hours was associated with roughly 40% higher flare risk, and the risk rose with more drinks.
Are eggs high in purines?
No. Eggs are a low-purine animal protein, which makes them useful when you are cutting back on meat.
The rest of this series
Start with the full uric acid diet plan, or check a single food against the evidence in the uric acid food checker.
Then take the food you actually eat:
- Is poha good for uric acid?
- Dal and uric acid
- Curd, paneer and uric acid
- Spinach, mushroom and cauliflower
How we counted
- A sample of member food logs from the YourTrainer app, 16 April to 21 September 2026. Members only, aggregated, never per person.
- Figures are the share of all logged food items that fell into each group, matched on the food name members typed.
- We report shares and medians only. No counts of people, meals or entries.
- Clinical statements come from the 2020 American College of Rheumatology gout guideline. Nothing here is medical advice or a substitute for your doctor's urate targets.
