How to Find Your Real Maintenance Calories (The 2-Week Method That Beats Every Formula)
Calculators guess your maintenance within a few hundred calories at best. The 2-week logging method measures it exactly, on your food, your body, your life. Here is the protocol.

Quick Answer
Your true maintenance calories cannot be calculated, only measured, and the measurement takes 14 days. Log everything you eat honestly for two weeks, weigh yourself every morning, and compare weekly averages. Stable weight means your average intake is your maintenance. Weight moved: adjust by roughly 500 kcal for every half kilo of weekly change. This beats every formula because it captures your real metabolism, your real cooking oil, and your real weekends, the three things calculators cannot see.
Why Formulas Miss
Every calculator, including good ones, runs a population equation over four inputs and asks you to guess your own activity level. People overestimate activity, underestimate portions, and Indian kitchens hide calories in tadka, frying oil, and the sugar dissolved in chai. Two people with identical stats can differ by hundreds of calories in real burn. Start with the TDEE calculator for a first estimate, then let your own body correct it, and if you want the science under the estimate, the BMR deep dive explains what the formulas are doing.

Eat your normal life, weekends included. Log every meal, every snack, the oil in the sabzi, the sugar in the chai, the three biscuits at 4 pm. The 60-dish macro chart covers the Indian staples apps get wrong.
Same scale, same time, after the washroom, before food. Write it down and look only at the weekly average. Daily jumps are water and salt theatre.
Average daily intake across 14 days. Compare week-1 and week-2 average weight. Stable: intake = maintenance. Lost half a kilo over the week: maintenance is about 500 above your intake. Gained half a kilo: about 500 below. That is the entire calculation.
Cut 300 to 500 below for fat loss, add 250 to 500 above for lean muscle, eat at the number to hold. If a deficit built on this measurement still does not move the scale for weeks, the deficit troubleshooter finds the leak.
In two weeks of honest data, almost everyone discovers the opposite: the metabolism is fine, the logging was fiction. The method's real gift is showing you your actual intake, most people are 300 to 600 kcal off their own estimate, in either direction.
Maintenance is not a tattoo. Every 5 to 7 kg lost or gained, or any big change in training or daily movement, shifts it. Rerun the two weeks when your body or routine changes materially, especially mid-diet when plateaus appear.
Bottom Line
Fourteen honest days beat every formula on the internet. Log it all, average the weigh-ins, adjust by the trend, and you own a number no calculator could give you, measured on your food and your body. Every coaching plan we run starts with exactly this measurement, because everything else is built on it.
