Bar chart of calories per piece for Diwali sweets and snacks, from kaju katli at 40 to 45 to coconut burfi at 265

Diwali abroad rarely fits into one evening. There is the temple, the community mela, the office potluck, and a friend's party on each weekend around it. Every one of them comes with a box of mithai and a bowl of namkeen. This guide gives you the calories in each piece, in the sizes you actually get, so you can enjoy the sweets you love and skip the ones you only eat because they are there.

The short answer

Most Diwali sweets land between 100 and 200 calories a piece. A shop piece of kaju katli is the lightest at 40 to 45, and a large coconut burfi is about 265. The size of the piece matters more than which sweet it is. Two besan ladoos already carry about 26 g of sugar, which is past the WHO's ideal limit of about 25 g for a whole day.

Calories in Diwali sweets, piece by piece

These are per piece or per serving, in the sizes sold in shops or served at home. Ranges show where two good sources differ, for example a homemade recipe and a packaged brand.

Sugar is shown where the source measured it. For sweets soaked in syrup, such as gulab jamun, jalebi and rasgulla, most of the calories come from that syrup.

What the numbers tell you

The size of the piece matters most

A shop piece of kaju katli weighs about 10 g. A homemade piece cut three times bigger is about 120 calories. Same sweet, three times the calories. If you make mithai at home, cut it small. Most people still take one piece, whatever its size.

Two ladoos use up a day of sugar

The WHO advises adults to keep free sugars under 10 percent of their daily energy, and says under 5 percent, about 25 g or 6 teaspoons, brings extra benefit. One 35 g besan ladoo has about 13 g of sugar. Two of them, and you are past the 25 g mark before dinner.

The namkeen bowl adds up quietly

A small handful of mixture, about 30 g, is 155 to 175 calories. That is close to a whole samosa. Nobody counts handfuls while talking at a party, and four of them make a full meal.

Nuts are not lighter, but they are better

Gram for gram, almonds (579 calories per 100 g) carry more energy than kaju katli (422 to 450). The difference is what comes with it: nuts bring protein and fibre and almost no sugar. A dry fruit box is a good gift. It is not a free snack.

A plan for Diwali parties abroad

  1. Eat a proper meal first. Dal, a sabzi, some paneer, chicken or eggs. Arriving hungry is how one ladoo becomes four.
  2. Choose two sweets you really love. The ones you only get at Diwali, or the ones your mother makes. Skip what you can buy any week at the Indian store.
  3. Put it on a plate and sit down. One piece of each, eaten slowly. Standing next to the tray is where the extra pieces go.
  4. Take namkeen in a small bowl, once. Then move away from the big bowl.
  5. Walk after the meal. Even 15 minutes around the block helps after a heavy evening.
  6. Keep your training that week. Shorter sessions are fine. Stopping completely is what turns one festive weekend into a lost month.

Reading the box from the Indian store

Packaged mithai sold in the US shows calories per serving, and the serving is often small. One kaju katli label we checked lists 40 g as a serving, which is 4 pieces. In the UK and the EU, labels always give values per 100 g as well, which makes two brands easy to compare. Check the serving size before you trust the calorie number, and count what you actually eat.

The morning after

Do not judge yourself by the scale the morning after a big party. Salty snacks and a late dinner hold extra water, and that shows up first. Go back to your normal meals and weigh again after a few days. If you want a wider plan for the whole festival and wedding season, read our festival season eating strategy.

Check any Indian meal yourself

Our free Indian food calorie calculator works in katoris and rotis, and the katori portion calculator shows what a portion really weighs. For grocery runs, the Indian grocery list for weight loss in the USA covers what to buy at the Indian store and the supermarket.
