  • The formula gap shrinks as body composition changes — someone who builds muscle and drops body fat will find their actual BMR moves closer to (or above) what a standard formula predicts, because their lean-mass-to-weight ratio changes.

How to Adjust Your Calorie Targets

  1. Calculate your BMR using Mifflin-St Jeor (the more accurate of the two standard formulas): for women, BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) − 5 × age − 161
  2. Apply an 8–10% downward adjustment as a starting estimate for South Asian body composition, unless you have measured lean mass data (DEXA, BIA scale) suggesting otherwise
