No Weight Loss in the First Week of Your Diet? What Our Coaches Tell Members (From Real Chats)

Day 6 is when members message "I don't see a difference on the scale". From real chats and classes: the weigh-in rule, the period swing, the dehydration stall, the restaurant bounce, and when to judge by the tape instead.

There is a day in every member's first fortnight when a message arrives in the nutritionist's chat. "I don't see a difference on the weighing scale." "No change in weight or inches." "Will my menstrual cycle affect weight?" In our chats that day is usually day 6 or 7. The plan is fine. The scale is doing what scales do. Here is what coaches and the nutritionist reply, and why.

Method: from a sample of member chats with YourTrainer coaches and the nutritionist, Sep to Oct 2026, and recorded classes, Aug to Oct 2026. Members anonymised, quotes verbatim. Period-weight observations come from coaching sessions, not a clinical study; see /health-sources for the guidelines we follow.

Why the scale has not moved in week one

Because one reading cannot see a 0.5 kg fat change under 1 to 1.5 kg of daily water movement. Salt, carbs, the period, bowel timing and hydration all move the number by more than a week of real fat loss does. Weigh the same way every morning, read the weekly average, and judge at 4 weeks with a tape.

The weigh-in rule our coaches send

This is the actual chat from a coach to a new member: "Please share your latest weight in kg. If you don't have it, record the weight tomorrow morning and send it to me here. The weight should be the one recorded first thing in the morning after the bowels are empty, ideally before taking any meals."

1

Same time: first thing in the morning.

2

Same state: after the bathroom, before food or water.

3

Same clothes, same scale, same spot on the floor. A scale on a carpet reads differently from tile.

4

Write it down every day, read it once a week. The weekly average is the number. One day is noise.

5

Note period days and restaurant meals next to the weight. After a month the pattern is obvious.

Five things that stall the scale in week one

1. The period

Our coaches' line in class: "We are the female. Hormonal imbalance is our daily dose." The pattern they see is 0.5 to 1 kg up on day 1 and 2, a drop of 300 to 400 g a few days later. The plan is not changed. The reading is annotated. Read what we change on period days.

2. Dehydration

From a recorded class on 5 October: "If the body is dehydrated, weight generally gets stuck sometimes." Members who report "hardly 1 litre" are asked to add 500 ml a day until they reach 2.5 to 3 litres. The scale often moves in the week water goes up, which feels backwards and is not.

3. Salt and the restaurant bounce

A BBQ lunch, a wedding dinner, a bag of chips at midnight (a member confessed exactly this) holds 1 to 2 litres of water for 24 to 72 hours. It is not fat; a 1 kg fat gain needs about 7,000 extra calories. The reply is always the same: keep the plan, re-weigh in three days.

4. New training

Muscles that have just started lifting hold water while they repair. Soreness peaks in the first month and then drops by half. A member who starts strength training and a diet in the same week often sees nothing on the scale for 10 days and then a drop.

5. The fast start, then the slowdown

Some people lose 2 kg in two weeks and then "stall". A coach's chat to one of them, verbatim: "Also want to acknowledge the 2 kg weight loss in 2 weeks. Good job on your commitment. Moving forward, the scale might move a bit slower, and that's completely normal. Our focus now is turning that weight drop into inches off the waist and keeping your energy and immunity high."

Coach's tip: Judge week one by what you did, not by what you weigh: four logged meals, 2.5 litres of water, three sessions, 7 hours of sleep. If those happened, the scale is late, not wrong.

What to measure instead

From 5 October onward our coaches take a tape measurement in most first sessions of the month: waist at the navel, hips, belly, chest, thighs, arms, in centimetres. Two results from that week in class: "32 waist, it was 34, so it reduced", and "in my clothes it is much better than on the scale". The tape sees fat loss that water hides. The full measurement routine our coaches use is coming later this month; until then, waist and the other metrics that beat BMI explains what to measure.

Fast start, then the slowdown

  • Weeks 1 to 2: 2 kg down. Message from her coach: good job, the scale will slow now, inches are next.
  • Week 3: scale flat for 8 days. She messaged on day 6. Period was due that week.
  • Week 4: tape taken in class. Waist down 2 cm. Weight down another 400 g after the period.

From her coach chat and class, Sep to Oct 2026. Name changed.

"Don't fixate on that weight number, because you're building muscle and losing fat at the same time." (Coach Vivek, in class)

When the scale is right and the plan is wrong

If four weeks pass with the same morning weight, the tape flat and the logs complete, then the plan needs changing, not the member. The usual causes in our logs are half-logged days (the restaurant dinner that never got recorded), oil that nobody counted, and weekend portions. That is the conversation to have with the nutritionist at the Monday check-in, with the log open.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The first week sits inside normal daily swings of 0.5 to 1.5 kg from water, salt, the menstrual cycle and bowel timing. Our coaches judge a plan after 4 weeks on the tape and the morning weight trend, not after 6 days on one reading.

First thing in the morning, after the bathroom, before food or water, in the same clothes, on the same scale. Our coaches ask for exactly this in chat and read the weekly trend, not single days.

Salt and carbohydrate from a restaurant meal hold 1 to 2 litres of water for a day or two. One member saw no change after a BBQ lunch and messaged in panic; the scale was back down within three days. That is water, not fat.

Yes. Our coaches see 0.5 to 1 kg up around day 1 and 2 of the period, then a 300 to 400 g drop after. Write period days next to your morning weight so you can read the pattern instead of reacting to it.

Fast starts of 1 to 2 kg in two weeks happen and are mostly water. After that our coaches expect roughly 0.5 kg a week and shift attention to centimetres off the waist. One coach's message after a 2 kg start: the scale will move slower now, and that is completely normal.
