Why Your Weight Goes Up Before Your Period (and Drops 300-400 g After): What 101 Online Training Classes Showed Us

Across 101 recorded YourTrainer online classes, periods or cramps came up in 16 sessions - and every time, the coach changed the plan on the spot. The scale usually jumps 0.5-1 kg on day 1-2 from water retention, then drops 300-400 g in the days after the period ends. Here is exactly what our coaches change, in their own words.

Method Note

Between 17 August and 7 September 2026 we recorded 126 live online personal-training classes with consent from members and coaches. 101 transcripts were readable. Everything below comes from those classes, not from a study we read. Client names are changed.

The pattern across 101 classes

16 of 101
Classes involved a period or cramps
0.5-1 kg
Typical scale jump, day 1-2
300-400 g
Typical drop after the period ends
Day 1-2
Upper body / stretching only

Case study: N., 30s, working professional, trains three mornings a week

N. had been logging her weight daily. On 5 August it read 68.7 kg. By early September it was 68.4 kg, but on her period day 2 she wrote "bloating, 68.4" and told her coach, "I'm not going down at all."

Her coach, Tanmana, did not change the plan. She changed the reading of the plan:

"That's why I have said just note down period day one, period day two, so that we can analyse how your body responds. It's normal. During the first or second day weight goes up slightly, and after the period you lose 300-400 grams."

That day's class became upper body only: dumbbell rows, presses, band work. No squats, no jumping jacks. Cardio was moved to a fasted morning walk on the following two days instead. N. left the class with a target instead of a worry: 66 kg before her trip to India, "easily, if we focus on the diet."

What to write in your weight log: Weight · period day (1, 2, 3...) · slept (hours) · trained (yes/no) · diet on plan (yes/no). Four extra words a day is what turns a scary number into a pattern.

What our coaches actually change on day 1 and 2

From the transcripts, this is the real protocol, not a theory:

  1. Ask first. Tanmana opens the class with "today is your period day 3, any cramps?" before anything else. If a client says she just got her period two hours ago, the plan changes on the spot.
  2. Switch to upper body or mobility. Rows, presses, curls, band pull-aparts. No lower-body loading, no plyometrics.
  3. Cramps: stretch and hydrate. Gokul's line to a first-timer: "You can reduce the cramps by the stretching and proper hydration." Severe cramps get a heat bag and rest - one client's class was cancelled the same day with the advice to sleep and drink cinnamon water.
  4. Keep the steps. Daily step count stays on the plan because it's activity, not exercise.
  5. Read the scale after the period, not during. The 300-400 g drop is the number that actually reflects progress.

Two more women from the classes

K., sharp pain 4-5 days before her period

K. warned her coach in advance. The class was lighter on those days and back to full strength once the pain passed. Her coach's note at the end of the block: "I am seeing overall progress in strength, in flexibility, in confidence also."

S., heavy cramps and a blood test

After a week of unusual swelling and fatigue, S. got a blood panel: iron, folic acid and vitamin D3 were all low. Two days into supplementation the swelling was noticeably down. Her coach's comment was not about training at all: "Sleep is very much important. Recovery is very much important, otherwise hormonal imbalance will happen."

When to get a blood test: If fatigue, swelling or heavier-than-usual periods last more than two cycles, ask your doctor for iron (ferritin), vitamin D3, B12 and thyroid. Our coaches only suggest supplements after a report, never before.

Why the scale moves

Water is used, not stored. Hormonal shifts before and during the period hold a little extra water and slow digestion - that's the 0.5-1 kg. It is not fat, and it leaves on its own. Fat loss over a month is decided by the calorie balance across all 30 days, which is why our coaches ask clients to read the monthly trend line, not the day-2 number.

What our coaches want you to stop doing

  • Skipping the whole week - day 1-2 lighter, the rest of the week normal
  • Weighing yourself on day 1 or 2 and changing the diet because of it
  • Doing jumping cardio "to make up for" a light day
  • Ignoring pain that is sharp and lasts - cramps are dull; sharp, localised pain is a doctor conversation, see /health-sources

Clients managing PCOS or thyroid conditions often see a more exaggerated version of this pattern - our PCOS & hormonal coaching and thyroid coaching programs build the cycle-tracking habit in from week one. See also our PCOS diet guide and thyroid diet guide.
