Protein Cost Calculator

The price on the tub tells you nothing until you know how much of it is protein. Type the price and the label, and see what 25 g of protein really costs, next to 52 powders and foods we priced on 2 Oct 2026.

Quick answer

Protein cost = price ÷ protein in the pack. Protein in the pack is the number of scoops (pack weight ÷ scoop size) times the protein per scoop.

At October 2026 prices, 25 g of protein cost ₹71 to ₹161 from the whey powders we checked in India, against ₹5.72 from soya chunks and ₹56 from eggs. In the US it was $1.32 to $2.68 from whey and $0.43 from dry beans.

The label shows

Both numbers are on the nutrition panel, usually as "per serving". Use the label, not the front of the pack.

How to Work Out Protein Cost by Hand

Three numbers from the label and the price are all you need. Use the nutrition panel on the back, not the claim on the front.

  1. 1

    Servings in the pack

    Pack weight ÷ scoop size

    1 kg (1,000 g) ÷ 35 g = 28.6 scoops

  2. 2

    Protein in the pack

    Servings × protein per scoop

    28.6 × 28 g = 800 g

  3. 3

    Cost of protein

Price ÷ protein in the pack

    ₹3,134 ÷ 800 g = ₹3.92 a gram, ₹98 for 25 g

Members reach for whey where protein is hardest to find: between meals. That makes the price of one scoop a daily cost, not a one-off, which is why the cost per gram matters more than the price on the tub. Read the food-log study.

The Cheapest Gram Is Not Always the Best Buy

Food wins on price almost every time. Soya, dal and chana give protein for a fraction of what any powder costs. The catch is what comes with it: 25 g of protein from moong dal also brings around 60 g of carbohydrate, and from peanuts around 50 g of fat. A scoop of whey brings about 120 kcal in total. When calories are tight, that is what you are paying for.

Among powders, look at the protein share before the price. A scoop that is 55% protein can rank well per gram and still give you twice the sugar of a plain concentrate. And buy the larger tub once you know you like a product: the 5 lb tub of the same whey costs about a third less per gram than the 2 lb one in our US list.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the price per gram of protein?

Divide the pack weight by the scoop size to get the number of scoops, multiply by the protein per scoop to get the protein in the pack, then divide the price by that. For a food, multiply the pack weight by the protein per 100 g and divide by 100 instead. The calculator above does both and shows the cost of 25 g, about one scoop.

What is the cheapest source of protein in India?

Dry soya chunks, by a wide margin: ₹5.72 for 25 g of protein at the price we checked, against ₹56 for eggs and ₹71 to ₹161 for whey powders. Dal and chana come next. Cheap protein is easy in India; the hard part is eating enough of it at every meal.

Is whey protein worth the money?

Per gram, whey costs more than soya, dal, milk and eggs. What it buys is convenience and calories: a typical scoop gives about 24 g of protein for 120 kcal, which is hard to match with a snack. In our members' logs, whey was the third most logged food, mostly between meals where protein was otherwise missing.

Why compare protein cost per 25 g?

25 g is roughly one scoop of whey and a sensible amount of protein for one meal or snack, so it puts a powder, a dozen eggs and a bag of soya on the same footing. The calculator also shows the cost per gram and what a month costs at the amount you plan to eat.

Does a cheaper protein powder mean lower quality?

Not always, but check the protein share. Divide protein per scoop by scoop size: a clean whey concentrate sits around 70 to 80%, an isolate higher. Some low priced powders reach their price with large scoops that are only 50 to 60% protein, the rest being sugar, creamer or flavour. Those still rank fairly per gram, but you get more calories with each gram of protein.
