Hair Fall in Indian Women: The Ferritin Test Your Doctor Missed

The most missed cause of hair fall in Indian women isn't your shampoo — it's low ferritin. The iron, thyroid & vitamin D test to run, and how to actually regrow hair.

Hair Fall in Indian Women: The Ferritin Test Your Doctor Missed

Quick Answer

If you're an Indian woman losing more hair than usual, the single most missed cause isn't your shampoo or your genes — it's low ferritin (your body's iron stores). Studies show a large share of women with diffuse hair shedding have ferritin below 30 ng/mL, yet most people are only tested for haemoglobin, which stays "normal" long after iron stores are depleted. The fix is rarely more oil or a new serum. It's testing ferritin, thyroid, and vitamin D together, then correcting the deficiency over 3–6 months while eating enough protein to actually grow hair back.

The one number to ask for

Don't accept "your haemoglobin is normal." Ask specifically for a ferritin test. Haemoglobin drops only after iron stores are already empty — ferritin catches the problem months earlier, while your hair is still shedding.

Disclaimer: This article is educational, based on peer-reviewed research on ferritin and hair loss. It is not a diagnosis. Hair loss has many causes (genetic, hormonal, autoimmune) — see a doctor or dermatologist for persistent shedding.

Why Indian Women Are Especially at Risk

~50%+of Indian women of reproductive age are anaemic or iron-deficient
<30ferritin (ng/mL) is linked to diffuse hair shedding in women
3–6months of consistent correction before regrowth is visible

Three things stack up against Indian women specifically:

  • Vegetarian diets rely on non-heme iron (from plants), which is absorbed far less efficiently than heme iron (from meat) — often 2–3x lower absorption.
  • Monthly blood loss from periods (especially heavy periods) steadily drains iron stores that a low-absorption diet struggles to replace.
  • Under-testing — ferritin is not part of a routine checkup, so deficiency runs for years while only haemoglobin (a late-stage marker) is checked.

The Ferritin – Thyroid – Vitamin D Triple Check

Here's what most single-issue articles miss: these three deficiencies overlap heavily in Indian women, and all three cause hair fall. Testing only one leaves the other two hidden.

MarkerWhat "low" looks likeHow it drives hair fall
Ferritin (iron stores)Below 30 ng/mLHair follicles are low priority for iron; they shed first when stores drop
Thyroid (TSH, T3/T4)TSH above range / hypothyroidSlows the hair growth cycle, causing diffuse thinning
Vitamin DBelow 20 ng/mLInvolved in the follicle growth cycle; deficiency is widespread in Indians
Common mistake

Buying an expensive "hair growth" serum or biotin supplement before testing. If the real problem is low ferritin or an underactive thyroid, no topical product will fix it — you're treating the symptom, not the cause.

How to Actually Fix It

1
Test first, don't guess

Get ferritin, a full thyroid panel (TSH + T3/T4), and vitamin D. Ask for the actual numbers, not just "normal/abnormal."

2
Correct iron the right way

If ferritin is low, your doctor may recommend an iron supplement. Take it with vitamin C (lemon, amla, orange) to boost absorption, and away from tea, coffee, and calcium/dairy, which block it.

3
Eat enough protein

Hair is made of a protein (keratin). Chronically low protein intake (common in Indian vegetarian diets) stalls regrowth even after iron is fixed. Aim for a palm-sized protein source at each meal.

4
Give it 3–6 months

Hair grows slowly. Ferritin has to rebuild first, then the follicle cycle recovers. Retest ferritin at 3 months to confirm it's actually rising.

Iron-Rich Foods for Vegetarian Indian Women

  • Best plant sources: ragi (finger millet), rajma, chana, sesame seeds, poha (flattened rice is often iron-fortified), spinach, dates
  • Absorption boosters (pair with iron foods): lemon, amla, tomato, guava, capsicum — all high in vitamin C
  • Absorption blockers (separate by 1–2 hours): tea, coffee, and calcium-rich dairy taken with meals
The realistic expectation

You cannot always fix a significant iron deficiency with diet alone, especially with heavy periods. Diet maintains iron; supplementation (under medical guidance) is often what rebuilds depleted stores. Both matter.

Bottom Line

Hair fall in Indian women is far more often a nutritional and hormonal signal than a hair-care problem. The highest-yield first step isn't a serum — it's a ferritin, thyroid, and vitamin D test, because these three overlap constantly and all cause shedding. Correct the deficiency, eat enough protein, give it 3–6 months, and retest to confirm your stores are actually rising. That sequence fixes the cause; everything else just treats the symptom.
