What People Actually Ask a Personal Trainer: 390 Questions From 101 Classes

Personal training clients ask an average of 3.9 questions per session - roughly 390 real questions across 101 classes in our study. These aren't generic fitness FAQs; they're the exact uncertainties that show up mid-workout, the form doubts, the nutrition gaps, and the unspoken worries that keep people from progressing.

If you're considering hiring a personal trainer, or you're already training and wondering what you should be asking, this post breaks down the real question patterns we heard - and shows you which ones matter most.

Method Note

Between 17 August and 7 September 2026 we recorded 126 live online personal-training classes with consent from members and coaches. 101 transcripts were readable. We categorized every question, comment, and clarification clients asked during their sessions. Client names are changed.

What questions should you ask a personal trainer before hiring?

Before you commit, ask about the coach's experience with your specific goal (weight loss, pain management, sport-specific strength). Ask if they adjust the program based on your sleep, energy, or injuries - not every coach does. Ask what happens if you miss a session, if they write your homework down, and if they explain the *why* behind each exercise.

In our study, coaches explained the reasoning behind an exercise in 83% of classes. This matters: clients who understand *why* they're doing something progress faster and stick longer. If your trainer just says "do 10 reps," that's not the same as "this targets your posterior chain because you're anterior-dominant."

What do clients actually ask a personal trainer?

The 390 questions broke into five clear patterns. Here's what real clients want to know:

1. Form & Technique (The "Am I Doing This Right?" Questions)

The most common category. Clients ask for form clarification, sometimes mid-set. One client said, "I didn't realize this exercise could hurt so much" - not a complaint, but a genuine uncertainty about whether pain means poor form or intensity.

This is where the coach's job is obvious: cue, demonstrate, adjust. Across the classes we reviewed, coaches programmed an average of 6.9 exercises per class and gave 8 form cues on average. Good coaches don't just count reps; they check in.

What to ask: "Will you show me the movement before I start? What should I feel?" A trainer who watches the first 2-3 reps and gives feedback is worth keeping.

2. Pain & Safety (The "Is This Normal?" Questions)

Clients ask if soreness is normal, if a sharp feeling in a joint is a red flag, if they should continue if something feels "off." These questions reveal worry, not weakness.

"This is one of the biggest reasons I don't come to the gym. I don't know how to move around this stuff."

That's a real client line from our study. They're not asking if they're strong enough; they're asking if it's *safe*. Coaches who ask "Do you have any pain points?" in 76% of sessions (as we found) build confidence faster. Your trainer should ask about old injuries, current niggles, and what felt off in the last week.

3. Nutrition & Eating (The "What Should I Eat?" Questions)

Clients ask about meal timing, protein intake, how much food matters versus training. One client said, "Food is going to be 80% of weight loss" - and they were asking for a realistic weekly plan, not a generic recipe blog.

The best trainers connect nutrition to the client's actual life. They don't prescribe; they ask "What does your typical day look like?" and build from there.

4. Progress & Plateaus (The "Why Isn't the Scale Moving?" Questions)

A client in our study said, "I am feeling light. I don't know if it shows on the scale but I am feeling light." Progress isn't always linear. Clients ask if they're doing enough, if they should switch programs, why effort hasn't translated to results yet.

Here's a hard truth: measurements or a progress check happened in only 16% of the classes we recorded. Most sessions relied on the client's own reporting. If you hire a trainer, ask how often you'll measure progress and what that looks like beyond the scale.

The longer view: One client told us, "I'd rather have a longer-term horizon than shed five kgs in a month like a lot of these people seem to promise." Sustainable weight loss, real strength, lasting habits - these take time. A trainer who respects that timeline is a trainer worth trusting.

5. Logistics (The "What If I Miss a Session?" Questions)

Travel, illness, work conflicts - clients ask what happens to the plan when life gets in the way. One client asked, "Since we are doing this, when I'm playing for one hour I'm not having any specific pains" - they were checking in about how training transfers to their sport.

How many questions does the average client ask per class?

3.9 questions per session. That's not three. That's not five. It's almost exactly four - and that's across the full range of experience levels, from absolute beginners to people returning after a year off the gym.

If your trainer fields 3-5 genuine questions per session, they're doing their job. If you're never asking anything, you might be holding back, or your trainer might not be inviting questions.

What's the most common first-class question?

It varies by goal, but across the board, new clients ask: "Am I doing this right?" or "Will this hurt?" On the first session, they're looking for safety and competence, not intensity.

About two-thirds of the clients in our study were intermediate - people who'd been to a gym before but had gaps in their routine or were restarting after time off. One-third were true beginners. Beginners ask more, and that's okay. Intermediate clients often ask fewer questions but should ask more (they sometimes carry bad habits forward).

Why this matters for you

If you're considering online personal training or hiring a coach, these real questions show you what to expect. You'll have doubts about form. You'll wonder about pain. You'll question whether food choices matter. You'll hit plateaus and ask why. That's not weakness - it's the honest reality of training.

A good trainer expects this. They greet you by name. They explain the why. They ask how you slept. They give you homework. They don't take it personally when you miss a session; they ask what got in the way and adapt the plan.

The 390 questions in our study represent 390 moments where a client trusted their coach enough to ask. That trust is built slowly, through consistency, through honesty about timelines, through coaches who listen as much as they program.
