The 6 PM Problem

Almost every Indian food log we review has the same shape. Breakfast is light on protein, lunch is dal, rice and sabzi, and then somewhere between 5:30 and 7 pm the wheels come off. Namkeen, biscuits with chai, a samosa on the way home.

It is worth being clear about what is actually happening: this is not a willpower failure. A lunch delivering 10 to 12 g of protein cannot sustain satiety for five hours. The evening craving is a predictable physiological response to a protein-light afternoon.

So there are two fixes, and you want both. Fix lunch protein, and replace the snack with something that does the job. This article handles the second.

The Three Worth Building a Habit Around

Roasted chana is the most practical snack on this list. It needs no preparation, keeps for weeks in a jar, travels to the office, and delivers 8 g of protein with 6 g of fibre. That fibre is why it holds off dinner hunger better than an equal-calorie portion of namkeen.

Greek yogurt is the highest protein-per-calorie option here at 15 g for 88 calories. Regular dahi gives 5.4 g for the same volume, so the swap roughly triples protein. Add jeera powder and black salt and it stops tasting like a diet food.

Paneer tikka is the one to make when the craving is for something substantial and savoury. Marinate 100 g paneer cubes in curd, ginger garlic paste, red chilli and a little besan, then air fry or tawa cook for 12 minutes. It reads as an indulgence and delivers 18 g of protein.

What These Replace

Usual snackProteinCalories
Mixture namkeen (50 g)5.0 g260
4 Marie biscuits1.6 g100
1 samosa3.2 g185
Pakora, 4 pieces5.5 g235
2 rusk with chai2.4 g160

The comparison that matters is not calories alone, it is protein per calorie. Namkeen at 260 calories for 5 g of protein does almost nothing for satiety. Roasted chana at 145 calories for 8 g does considerably more, for roughly half the calories.

The Chai Question

Worth addressing directly, because for many Indian households the snack is inseparable from the chai. Chai with sugar is about 90 calories a cup. Four cups a day is 360 calories, roughly equivalent to two rotis and a sabzi, consumed without any sense of having eaten.

Unsweetened chai is 55 calories. If you drink three or four cups daily, dropping the sugar saves more calories over a week than changing the snack does. It is also an easier habit to hold, because the ritual stays intact.

Making It Stick

Prepare for the 6 pm decision rather than making it at 6 pm. Keep a jar of roasted chana and makhana at your desk, and boiled sprouts or Greek yogurt in the fridge. The snack you eat is almost always the one within arm's reach, so the work is in stocking, not in resisting.

To check whether your lunch is actually the problem, build it in the Indian food calorie calculator and look at the protein percentage. Under 15 percent and the evening craving is coming from there. Set your daily target with the protein calculator.
