What You Actually Get in a Personal Training Session: 101 Sessions Counted

A typical YourTrainer session ran 58 minutes, one-to-one, with about 7 exercises, 8 form cues and 4 questions from the client. Before you compare trainer fees, it helps to know what a session should contain. We reviewed 101 coaching sessions as case studies and counted what actually happened in them, then looked at 931 coaching questionnaires to see who asks for a trainer in the first place.

What fills the 58 minutes

94% of sessions were one-to-one. A warm-up was described in 94% of them and followed the same pattern across all four coaches: joint rotations, then dynamic stretches, then 30 seconds of pulse raisers such as jumping jacks, usually 5 to 10 minutes in total. The main block averaged 6.9 exercises. In 75% of sessions the coach raised the weight or the difficulty once the client's form held.

Most of these habits showed up in most sessions. One did not: measurements or a progress check happened in only 16% of sessions. That is the weakest habit across all our coaches, and it is the one you should ask any trainer about, because it is how you see progress that the scale hides.

The 23 hours outside the session

One of our coaches put it plainly: you have one hour with the coach and 23 hours without. So a large part of each session is spent on those 23 hours.

Sleep, energy or stress came up in 77% of sessions. Coaches typically asked for 10,000 steps, 2.5 to 3 litres of water and 7 to 8 hours of sleep. The 4 numbers our coaches track shows the targets against what clients reported.

Pain came up in 68% of sessions

Some pain or discomfort was part of 68% of sessions. The knee was mentioned in 65%, mostly as a form cue, wrists or grip in 29%, the lower back in 10% and shoulders in 6%. The usual fix was a change of stance, a swapped exercise or a lighter load, rather than ending the session. This is one of the clearest differences between a coach watching you and a workout video.

Who asks for a personal trainer

Between 22 June and 17 September 2026, 931 people filled our coaching questionnaire. In India, 86% were beginners or had trained on and off, 69% ticked at least one physical discomfort, and 76% picked two or more goals.

That is exactly the group that gets the most from supervision: people who have not yet built a routine that holds, often while managing back, knee or shoulder pain.

How to judge whether a trainer is worth the fee

Price comparisons tell you what you pay. These checks tell you what you get. Ask for a trial session and look for each of them.

How we counted

  • Case studies: 101 YourTrainer coaching sessions from 17 August to 7 September 2026 (126 held; 25 could not be reviewed), 26 clients, 4 coaches. Behaviour shares use the 91 to 93 sessions where they could be judged.
  • Questionnaire: 931 people who filled the coaching questionnaire from 22 June to 17 September 2026, counted once each. Country comes from the connection location.
  • Only aggregates are published. No client names, contact details or individual answers.
  • These are our own sessions, so they describe how YourTrainer coaches work, not every trainer in India.
